Kitaoji Rosanjin (1883-1959), a genius of beauty and cuisine, will celebrate the 140th anniversary of his birth in 2023. The "Shioda Collection" held by the Setagaya Art Museum is the collection of Mr. Iwaji Shioda, who was a good friend and supporter of Rosanjin. The collection is very valuable not only for its wide range of genres, including ceramics, lacquerware, calligraphy, and paintings, but also for the fact that Mr.Shioda sometimes repaired damage arising during the kiln process by himself and continued to use the pieces in daily life. On the other hand, Kasama Nichido Museum of Art manages and exhibits "Shunpu Banri-so," the former residence of Kitaoji Rosanjin, which was moved from Kitakamakura to Kasama city in 1965, and in 2003 added the "Kawashima Collection," formerly owned by an American collector who was a friend of Rosanjin, including Sydney B. Cardozo. This exhibition marks the 140th anniversary of Rosanjin's birth, and brings together these two collections to show once again the depth of Rosanjin's art.
