Kasama Nichido Museum of Art's 50th Founding Anniversary
The Untimely End of Young Talents

October 1 [Sat.] - December 18 [Sun.] 2022

Shunsuke MATSUMOTO "Station" 1942 Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art

Looking back on the history of Japanese modern art, there are quite a few "premature painters" who produced outstanding works but died young, such as Shigeru AOKI, Shoji SEKINE, Tsune NAKAMURA, Kaita MURAYAMA, Yuzo SAEKI, Ryusei KISHIDA and Shunsuke MATSUMOTO. In their short lives, these painters created new expressions that were not bound by authority or formality and carved their names in Japanese modern art history along with the words they left behind. Facing their inner selves and painted with youthfulness and passion, their artworks transcended time and fascinate us living today. In the Meiji and Taisho eras, when these premature painters were active, were a time of respect for individuality, self-esteem and celebration of life. This exhibition introduces Takeji Fujishima and other painters who led their generation, and explores the historical background of the time. Also, it will be introduced that Tsune NAKAMURA, a painter who was born in Mito city and celebrates the 135th anniversary of his birth this year, the "Nakamuraya Salon" by Aizo SOMA and his wife Kuromitsu, and "Ikebukuro Montparnasse" where Tsune built his studio.
