Ryusei KISHIDA

"Portrait of Maruyama" (1921)
Ryusei KISHIDA (1891-1929)
Date 1921
Materials/ Techniques oil on canvas
Size 40.7 x 31.5 cm

Ryusei painted many portraits for a Japanese painter. The portraits can be found in his early works, which were known as the "headhunting of Kishida." The portraits he painted were only of family members, close friends and acquaintances, never of the professional artist's model.
This portrait is one of the paintings displayed at the personal exhibition of KISHIDA Ryusei at the Ryuitsu-sou in Kanda, and it was painted in the later period in Kugenuma, when he left us remarkably small number of the oil portraits, except for the series of the Reiko's portraits.
Since then, Ryusei digested the influences from the realist miniature paintings of the Northern Renaissance Art and Albrecht D?rer (1471-528), for instance. Instead, he started to incline toward Japanese-style paintings and other oriental tastes.
This portrait of Maruyama and the <> (Tokyo National Museum, Important Cultural Property) share some similarities in compositions and touches of the brush, while he painted two different models. This portrait finished with the soft taste of beauty transcending realism.
